In North America and Europe, more than 35 million people suffer from acne, making it one of the most common of all the skin disorders. While many acne treatments are readily available, a large number of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies continue to invest in research on new treatments. Current clinical trials and research studies explore and test safer and more effective treatment options.
An acne study published in 2001 by Penn State College of Medicine has important ramifications for
women
who use estrogen therapy to control acne. The acne study revealed that much lower amounts of estrogen are needed to control acne than was previously thought. The research means that women taking estrogen for acne will experience fewer side effects, as the amount prescribed will be significantly lower. Such research and studies would be impossible without volunteers willing to participate in the clinical trial.
