Birmingham, Alabama is one of those cities that is truly greater than the sum of its parts. Originally called Elyton, Birmingham grew from an insignificant farm community to an industrial giant in the late 1800s. At the beginning of the 20th century Birmingham's mills continued to produce the iron and steel needed to defend freedom and build a new world. Although its reputation suffered during the turbulence of the 1960s and 70s, the influence of the University of Alabama at Birmingham has given the city a renewed sense of 'becoming' as it enters the 21st century.
