Birmingham, England

Birmingham today is a fascinating city of many layers, social, cultural and economic. The UK's second largest city has finally shaken off its drab image of being a rough-edged, industrial, urban conglomeration. Not that it has had a volte-face and turned its back on the industries that made it great during the eighteenth century. Far from it! The city known as the "Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution" and home of James Watt (of steam engine renown) has merely diversified and refined its identity. Birmingham has, literally, cleaned up its act.
